Ms. Charters is a partner based in the firm’s Syracuse and Buffalo offices. Ms. Charters joined the firm in 2013 as a partner in the New York City office, and returned to her native Buffalo in 2015, as an integral part of the firm’s continued expansion in Western New York. Ms. Charters’ practice focuses on the defense of product liability litigation, with an emphasis on environmental exposure matters on behalf of local, regional and national product manufacturers, distributors and suppliers.
Ms. Charters’ diverse litigation experience includes the defense of product manufacturers in the New York City Asbestos Litigation (“NYCAL”) as well as the representation of a broad range of environmental product liability litigation, for claims arising from alleged exposure to asbestos, benzene, lead, mold, silica and dust exposure. Ms. Charters was part of the firm’s defense team representing numerous defendants before the Southern District of New York in the World Trade Center Disaster Site Litigation related to claims brought by workers alleging injuries from their work in the buildings around the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Ms. Charters also frequently represents premises owners in complex premises liability litigation arising out of claims for personal injuries.
Prior to joining McGivney, Kluger & Cook, Susan was a partner at a New York law firm where she represented domestic and international product manufacturers in product liability litigation, as well as global insurers in large-dollar coverage litigation in courts throughout the country. Ms. Charters also represented leading hotel chains in complex premises liability litigation arising from personal injury, assault and wrongful death claims and frequently advised global insurance carriers in the defense of claims arising from terrorist acts. Additionally, Ms. Charters’ served as U.S. counsel to the London Insurance Market on Anti-Terrorism Financing Litigation in New York federal courts.
As a former prosecutor, Susan is versed in courtroom and jury presentation and is admitted to practice before all New York State trial courts and the federal courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Ms. Charters is a member of American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Defense Research Institute, Western New York Trial Lawyers Association and the Bar Association of Erie County. Additionally, she serves as a member of the firm’s Diversity Committee.
