Michael J. Lunga

Mr. Lunga was born in Newark, New Jersey on October 3, 1947. He is admitted to the Bar of the States of New Jersey and New York, as well as the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He took his legal education at Rutgers School of Law Newark (J.D. 1973). After serving as law secretary to The Honorable H. Curtis Meanor, Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division (1973-1974), Mr. Lunga became associated with Shanley & Fisher, P.C. (1974-1982). At Shanley & Fisher, P.C., now known as Drinker, Biddle & Reath, he was heavily involved in complex litigation practice specializing in medical malpractice and other professional negligence matters. Upon leaving Shanley & Fisher, P.C., he became a full partner at Amato, Salerno & Lunga, then located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. In 1986, Mr. Amato left the firm and Salerno & Lunga, P.C., relocated to Verona, New Jersey. In 1991 Mr. Lunga became the founding partner of his own firm which eventually was known as Lunga, Evers & Johnson, P.C. From 1991 to 2007, when he became “Of Counsel” to McGivney, Kluger, Clark and Intoccia.
He specializes in the defense of medical malpractice, nursing malpractice, dental malpractice, nursing home defense and other professional liability matters. Mr. Lunga was first certified by the New Jersey Supreme Court Board on Trial Attorney Certification in 1982 as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney. He was recertified in 1991, 1998 and 2005. He has served as an Associate Editor of the Essex County Bar Chronicle (1978-1980). He currently serves on the Supreme Court Committee on Model Civil Jury Charges for its 2018-2020 term. Mr. Lunga, while providing a broad range of legal services for individual and corporate clients, remains primarily devoted to complex litigation matters, including professional liability (medical, dental and nursing home), toxic tort, asbestos and general liability defense. He has always prided himself in the level of communication he has with his clients, keeping them abreast of all developments in the case. Mr. Lunga has been successfully defending physicians for over 34 years and during that time has amassed a significant amount of expertise in medical issues as related to both liability and damages. Mr. Lunga enjoys the highest rating available from Martindale-Hubbell (AV). Mr. Lunga has lectured in numerous continuing education seminars on trial practice and professional liability matters. He has recently published an article on the changes in the law of “informed consent” in New Jersey. He has represented physicians, dentists and nurses in professional liability matters and before professional boards.
He has also been involved in matters involving hospital privileges and other administrative matters. He has been National Coordinating Counsel for Chubb & Son, Inc., in their defense of physicians in the silicone breast implant litigation. He has been involved in other types of litigation, including general liability, product liability, personal injury, drug liability, toxic tort litigation, subrogation, commercial litigation and legal malpractice matters. He had the honor of being elected by his peers one of the 100 top attorneys in the State of New Jersey in civil defense litigation as recognized in 2005 through 2020 by New Jersey Monthly Magazine.
