Stephen B. Toner

Steve Toner is a Partner in MKCI’s Brooklyn, NY and Hartford, CT offices, with over 30 years of experience in trying complex and high exposure civil cases. Steve’s practice includes mass tort litigation, mass disaster litigation (MDL), complex products liability, construction accidents, medical and professional malpractice, insurance coverage disputes, fraud, and general liability cases involving high exposure claims for personal injury and property damages. He has a significant record in obtaining defense verdicts in complicated medical malpractice actions and products liability cases, as well as a wide range of general liability actions, and experience in all aspects of trial preparation, as well as trial and appellate practice.
Steve is a National Board of Trial Advocacy Certified Civil Trial Specialist, certified by the credentialing agency for trial lawyers recognized by the American Bar Association. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association and a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the New York Trial Lawyers Association, The Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, The New York State Medical Practice Defense Bar Association, The Catholic Lawyers Guild, The Insurance Federation of the State of New York, and the Defense Research Institute – medical malpractice and trial tactics sub-committee. Furthermore, Steve is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocacy, an invitation only association of top trial lawyers from around the country. Steve currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Defense Association of New York (DANY) and the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association (CDLA)
In addition to his litigation experience, Steve has been a frequent lecturer to physicians at the State University Hospital system on malpractice avoidance as part of their continuing medical-legal education. Steve has also appeared several times on Court-TV as a guest commentator on trial tactics and litigation strategy.
Steve has been named one of New York Metro area’s “Super Lawyers” every year since 2008, and was named one of America’s Top 100 Civil Defense Litigators in 2019.[1]
When not on trial, Steve is an avid outdoorsman, tennis player, golfer, sailor and accomplished downhill skier and also enjoys traveling.
Prior to joining MKCI in 2020, Steve was a founding member of an insurance defense firm, where he practiced for 24 years, growing the firm to have offices across four states. Steve’s skill, both in and out of the courtroom, resulted in significant victories for clients and the continued growth of the firm. In addition, from 1978 through 1983, he worked for AIG’s high risk and excess lines carrier, the Lexington Insurance Company, where he established the Recovery Unit of the Claims Department and served as nationwide manager of all outside counsel on their excess claims litigation and Manager of the Reinsurance Department.
Steve obtained his Juris Doctor degree from New England Law, where he completed courses in International Trade and Investment at Kings College, London, England, as well as at the University of Hong Kong’s School of Law in Hong Kong. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
